Grey Whistle Test w/ Moon Cup + David Western

In the front bar at Brunswick’s iconic Retreat Hotel, we have three eclectic, up and coming local acts gracing the stage later this month.

Melbourne’s Grey Whistle Test released their debut EP in September 2018. Their indefinable style is touching and evocative and their live set never voids from experimentation nor ambience. Even more poignant and ambitious, they’re second EP is only a matter of weeks away.

David Western's bashful and winsome sensibility has fooled many. An explorer of personal space, soaring downcast rock and dimly-lit folk tunes, he's an old soul that writes with purpose - observing the norm and turning things inside out.

Performing unheard songs years in the making, that sound one way and make you feel another, a provoked curiosity and lasting fascination is undeniable.

MOON CUP is the new solo project of Rita Khayat (Spiral Perm). Armed with driving bass lines and accompanied by hypnotic drums, it's post punk that's larger than the sum of it's parts. Smouldering but tender, MOON CUP is quickly becoming a fixture of the Melbourne scene and definitely one to watch.

This is a unique line-up and it might be the first and only time you ever see it. Join us for an evening of up and coming talent.

Sydney Road Street Party w/ Mick Turner + Good Morning + Easy Browns + more!

“As soon as the sun comes out every bastard has a festival, it just goes bonkas"
Kenny Smyth, Kenny, 2006.

It's Brunswick Music Fest time! To celebrate, Sydney Road has parcelled together a little street party, and guess what? We're a part of it!

We're on that multi-stage tip. One in, one out. We aren't serving up a lineup that is meant to make sense. The only thing that ties these 6 acts together is that they make BLOODY GOOD MUSIC. Who are we talking, you wonder?

STAGE 1:
Tamara & the Dreams
firstkiss
Good Morning

STAGE 2:
Easy Browns
Mick Turner
One V v special guest!

Oh, and we can fit a bunch more of ya in this time. So that's pretty cool! And it's FREE as always!

The Retreat Hotel is a safe space. This gig is for everyone, this lineup is for everyone. Any hint of discriminatory behaviour will have you booted, so in the words for Aunty Meredith, don't be a dickhead yeah?

Venues 3056 w/ Terrible Truths + Primo + Erica & Steph

In conjunction with Brunswick Music Festival, our beloved postcode has brought together a smattering of the best in Melbourne's live music, and it's all FREE!

Each venue serving up a dollop of what they've been grooving to lately, and we're no different.

TERRIBLE TRUTHS
Following a brief period away from Melbourne's live music scene, Terrible Truths are set to return in 2019, and having them perform our 3056 event seemed a no-brainer. Marked by instrumentation that seems to dance around one another with some sort of chaotic order, Terrible Truths are as genre-less as they are brilliant. Their music gets crowds moving, and we can't wait to hear them live once again!

PRIMO
Primo are the best. Amici is undeniable. Hit laden from start to finish. We've wanted Primo to play The Retreat for 12 months now. We're glad it's finally happening!

Erica Dunn & Steph Hughes
Has there been a collaboration that has warranted more excitement? Steph & Erica have something exciting on the way, and we are so so glad that they've chosen to play our pub on a Wednesday night.

So that's our plans for Wednesday March 7. It'll be good though, won't it?

NOAH DILLON 'Holding On' Single tour comes to Melbourne
with special guests: Sleeping Lessons & Tina Growls

*********************************************
PERTH'S NOAH DILLON ANNOUNCES "HOLDING ON" & NATIONAL TOUR ~ SINGLE OUT FEB 1ST

“another total winner from noah dillon. it blends some sunny, real estate type guitars with a grittier edge. and that modest mouse tinge is still there which is juuuust fine."
- Declan Byrne, Triple J on "You Did It To Yourself"

"Noah Dillon knocked his set out of the park... 2018 has been a massive year for him, so do yourself a favour and keep an eye out for what he’s got up his sleeve next" -
X-Press Mag Live Review

Singer-song writer Noah Dillon, has recently exploded onto the vibrant WA music scene with his 5 piece alt-rock band. His lyric driven music is a melting pot of honest stories and emotional tales, seamlessly colliding mundane existence with the darkest depths of life. Opening 2019 with a bang, Dillon has just announced the release of his new heartfelt single "Holding On" (Out Feb 1st) and a national tour to boot.

Written about the death of a close friend, "Holding On" was something of a coping mechanism for Dillon as he explains, "This song looks into the enormity and injustice of death at such a young age and the trail of destruction, questioning and emptiness it leaves behind for the loved ones around them. After the initial impart of losing a friend that had passed I found a fear in returning to my normal routine and life moving along without them. The title of the song (Holding On) is in reference to holding onto the things that make my life keep spinning for the person thats no longer here because thats what they would want."

Recorded at Tunafish Studio (Stella Donnelly) with Broderick Madden-Scott, the song was recorded to feel as real and raw as the emotional heart of the song, which had Dillon play most of the extra instruments on the track (synths, guitars, keys).

“The art work was inspired by a shot from a Wes Anderson film, and taken on the Swan River. The balloon symbolises the baggage of death not as a weight on who we are but a flying memory and guiding strength forward.” - Noah Dillon

The group released their first single, "The Man I’m Not", in 2017 with huge success, gathering over 150,000+ streams on Spotify and community radio airplay across Australia. This success grew with a second single titled "Maggots", released in May last year, receiving airplay on Triple J and becoming the most played song on RTRFM 92.1 in May, as well as their 6th most played song of 2018.

Noah’s music is a genre bending mix of singer song-writer inspirations such as Bob Dylan and Courtney Barnett with the tear jerking attitude of Modest Mouse and Alex G creating a unique kaleidoscope of songs that'll make you question who you are.

"Combining and juxtaposing the mundanities of everyday life against concepts of love, death and purpose; the band aims to provoke emotion, question actions and create a cathartic listening experience." - Noah Dillon

Major Bummer w/ The Gems + Del Boca Vista

On January 1st, 2019 at 12:01, Major Bummer released the first taster of their debit album 'Party Time' into the world (10 pounds, 3 ounces).

It was a 'Double A-Side', mainly because Jules and Nick couldn't agree on which song to choose. "Let's do your's first" said Nick."No I insist, after you good sir, your solo is way tastier", Jules replied, and on and on it went.

These negotiations began way back in May so it comes as a relief to learn that the boys have finally got off the socials and come to an agreement.

It's one song each, fair is fair you get what you get and you don't get upset. Microwave Burrito & Clear History. This is the track listing, and this is why We Launch. Because It's There. Yes We Can.

Also playing are power pop specialists The Gems, back playing live after years in exile mastering the magic chord between B and C. Listed amongst their influences are drinking beer, drinking wine, smoking, dancing, listening to other bands, eating and playing music. We're sold, you had us at drinking.

Also of note is the return of Del Boca Vista, the guitar-led wonder project keyboardist/pedal steelist/wizard Daniel from the Major Bummers, who has promised to open the show with all the hits.

It starts at 3pm, finishes at 6pm, it's in the front bar, The Retreat is rad, kids are welcome, dogs must be underpanted and it's FREE!

Oh yeah almost forgot, songs here:
