Jenny McKechnie & Sam Agostino - Joint solo residency

Jenny McKechnie is a songwriter that's been moonlighting in punk bands around Melbourne for the last half decade. Stripped of the fuzz pedals and cyclonic energy of her band Cable Ties her songs stand just as fierce and powerful in solo mode. Honest, tough and vulnerable songs about trying to make it through the world in one piece. Stunningly delivered in a huge, resonant voice by a weapon guitarist - as simple and complicated as rock 'n' roll need be.

Sam Agostino is best known for fronting garage punk no hoppers Digger and The Pussycats. When he isn’t busy wasting time in that outfit he can be found pumping out no frills lo-fi punk jams under the moniker Brat Farrar. In solo mode he’ll play material from those acts as well as new and old material from previous ensembles.

Jenny and Sam join forces to play two special solo shows at the The Retreat Hotel on Tuesday September 18 (with special guest Jess Owen) and Tuesday September 25 (with special guests Kate Alexanderr).

Free entry. 8pm start.

Claire Taylor w/ Van Walker

Claire Anne Taylor and Van Walker are teaming up for a double whammy of musical mayhem at The Retreat Hotel in Brunswick on Sunday, October 7.

3pm: Van Walker
4pm: Claire Anne Taylor

More about the artists:

CLAIRE ANNE TAYLOR

‘A national treasure’ - ABC Radio
‘Taylor’s voice is the stuff of musical legend’- Canberra City News

With a voice that recalls a huskier, feminine version of Van Morrison, Claire Anne Taylor crafts soulful folk songs that are alternatively lush and intimately earthy. Born in Tasmania's ancient Tarkine rainforest, Taylor’s music is reflective of her wild and remote upbringing. With a powerfully captivating stage presence, her live shows leave the audience in no doubt that they have just witnessed something extraordinary.

Claire Anne Taylor will be playing a show with her band at The Retreat Hotel to support the release of her new single 'Hold Me, Darling'.

~

VAN WALKER

'If Bob Dylan was born 20 years later and grew up fraternising in Collingwood bars, he would sound like this.' - Patrick Emery, Beat Magazine

'Van Walker writes songs with the ease the rest of us breathe.' JB HiFi MAG

Born & raised on the windswept prairies of north-west coast Tasmania, between lashings of hallucinogenic cheese & Magic Johnson, weened on William Blake & Ribald magazine, Van first heard the music of Bob Dylan around adolescence & began picking guitar & writing songs. Some hundreds of songs later and a hell-bent pick, he moved to Melbourne to form the rocknroll outfit The Swedish Magazines, and sing his unique hillbilly stuff on the side.

Drawing on the grand storytelling tradition of artists such as Ray Davies, Townes Van Zandt, Leon Payne & John Prine, & the acoustic finger-styles of John Fahey & Mississippi John Hurt, Van created a sound both old & new, with a laconic familiarity that speaks to the heart with an intimacy more effortless than contrived.

Life Strike w/ The Blinds

Life Strike is a garage rock/punk band from Melbourne Australia who sing catchy songs about our dystopian future. Their characters inhabit and explore the post-apocalyptic wasteland.

Bringing with them some of the sensibilities of their previous bands Deaf Wish and Dollar Bar, Nick Pratt (bass, vox) and Patrick McCabe (guitar, vox) along with Will Zerno on drums, use a combination of noise-rock epics, garage pop, and short stabby punk to bring the wasteland to life.

Their live set has drawn comparisons to classic acts like The Gordons, Wire, The Cure and The Scientists, also modernists like The Black Lips and Parquet Courts.

Sore eyes is tim deane and chris willard ( superstitions, waywardbreed, hired guns ) on guitars, damian fitzgerald on drums with me, anthony paine plugging away on bass and vocals. over the last year we've written a bajilion new songs ... for me it's been liberating to concentrate on the bassline and the lyrics and channel some of my lou reed, leon russell and tom petty grief into something useful !

i'm completely spoilt singing from the rhythm section were i belong, with tim and willy weaving guitars and damian ( Pony Face ) getting everything right first time.

i could think of no better companion on this afternoon adventure than claire - genius songwriter and old friend from gigs of yore with fuzz pedals set to stun.

come on down !

Mr. McClellands Finishing School

It's the first Friday of September so we're heading back to The Retreat Hotel to celebrate! (Because what further reason do we need?)

From 10pm we'll be pumping the tunes with two of our favorites -
DJs Kieran O'Sullivan & Cassie McDonald - on deck!

It's classic Mr. McClelland's Finishing School action in one of Brunswick's most iconic venues! What's not to love?

Come dance with us!

And for those that need a reminder...

Mr. McClelland's Finishing School is a celebrated night of dancing to pop music.

And that means all kinds of pop music;

From The Smiths to The Beatles, from Weezer to Prince, from Belle & Sebastian to The Supremes, from Pulp to Passion Pit, from James Brown to Blur, from Rage Against the Machine to Run DMC, from The Spice Girls to Arcade Fire.

It's all for dancing.

Featuring music you really like and music you had forgotten you really like and music you will soon really like. Nobody can go from Rancid to Whitney Houston like Finishing School can.
It's crowded, sweaty and joyous. Come along and shake it.

You've been to other club nights... now come to the Finishing School.
