  • The Retreat Hotel 280 Sydney Road Brunswick, VIC, 3056 Australia (map)

MAIN ROOM / TICKETED

Drawing inspiration from 60s and 70s rock, folk, and Melbourne dole wave, Potluck is a collaboration between four singer-songwriters who aren’t afraid to lay all their feelings out on the dinner table. Like the name suggests, their set is diverse, casual, and intimate.Their debut album Out The Back is packed with fat harmonies, jangly guitars, and open-hearted reflections on grief, heartbreak, wistfulness, and the general state of things—the good and the bad.

Maggie Alley is a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and vocal powerhouse with an unfiltered view of life around her. She has an ingrained habit of shaking the world by its hairy, devilish horns when she has something to say – which is often. Maggie is Punk, rock, blues, folk and everything in between. A preternatural songwriting talent recognised early by collaborators like ARIA winner Matt Walker (producer of her first EP) and renowned Australian vocalist Dallas Frasca, long-time Melbourne music scribe Jeff Jenkins took to ABC radio to compare her to “a young Patti Smith”

If nostalgia starred in a late summer 70s film, its soundtrack would feature The Rayes. Emotive, and at times haunting – their distinctive sound elicits something hard to label but easy to feel. Superimposing lilting harmonies and melodic basslines, the Melbourne-based, Seattle-born group recalls themes of identity, yearning, and witty reflection to sweeping emotion. The band is led by sisters, Jordan and Rebecca Stobbe, whose vocals and harmonies have been compared to Joni Mitchell, Fleetwood Mac, and the Indigo Girls.

The Retreat Hotel would like to acknowledge the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin Nation, the traditional custodians of the land on which The Retreat now stands, and pay our respects to all elders past, present and emerging. We acknowledge that sovereignty has never been ceded and that our venue operates on stolen land.
