The Sunken Sea w/ Tamara & the Dreams + Dez

At long last your favourite melancholic mates have created some new music! Joining us are the wonderful sound crafters Tamara & the Dreams and Dez!

About the bands...

Dez

Dez are a 4 piece Melbourne-based band creating a blend of indie, jazz, and surf rock. Their sound has drawn comparisons to Jeff Buckley and King Krule.

Tamara & the Dreams

Whimsical, bittersweet guitar songs that explore what it means to be young and alive

The Sunken Sea

The Sunken Sea are a brooding art rock band from Melbourne.

The large collective of trained musicians creates music with sincerity and soul that makes your heart swell.

Led by the turbulent lyrics and powerful baritone vocals of songwriter and bassist Dougal James, they forge syrupy harmonies and intricate rhythms that evolve and undulate in powerful and unexpected ways.

Lachlan Bryan (Solo) w/ Friends

Back when I was the booker at The Retreat, I installed Charles Jenkins as a kind of permanent exhibition, playing every Monday night from 8pm - 10pm. Well, on the last Monday of April I'll be filling in for him, playing solo and selfish but also getting some friends up to play some tunes.

This show is still evolving in my mind - I want to do something different - maybe I'll do a set of covers of some of my favourite local artists' songs, or maybe I'll play in costume, or maybe I'll just recite a few monologues from my favourite plays. I DO own a copy of all the Seinfeld scripts, so maybe I'll assemble a small cast and we'll just act out few episodes. I'm open to suggestion - but I' definitely planning on making it fun - so please come along and join me!

Horatio Luna w/ Proto Moro + Malla

Come along to the Retreat on the 9th of May for a FREE SHOW chocker-block filled with captivating compositions and a celebration community! Horatio Luna and Proto Moro - new found friends and purveyors of experimental jazz are excited to put on a smash hit blockbuster for all you beautiful beings! Malla will be joining them too with their spiritual jazz stylings and will make your inner core tremble with excitement.

The night will be lit up in amazing visuals by the one an only, Liam Martin, and tunes will be pumping all night with Buddy Nice and Aka Zeb sharing the decks between sets!

Horatio Luna will be coming in fat with that Detroit House for a free show at the Retreat! He has been bridging the two aesthetics as a solo producer and band leader. An offshoot of the 30/70 collective to which this left leaning jazz musician is a founding member.

New cats Proto Moro have just entered the scene and are bleeding their souls into every venue they enter. They have an experimental and psychedelic tone about their approach, but encompass the energy that will make your booty's shake as they explore genres such as house, funk fusion and hip hop.

Malla are a large ensemble with a beautiful and swelling sound. Their exploration of spiritual jazz and heavy hitting tunes will make you turn to the person next to you and simultaneously hug and dance with them. This is not an experience that you want to miss!

Francis Tait + Hannah McKittrick w/ Zac E Tea + Bumpy

On May 11, the retreat is serving up an arvo of intimate Retreat front bar shows. Free entry!

Francis Tait is a non pivotal member of both The Vacant Smiles and Squid Nebula telling stories and singing songs about being human and 21st century life through a wordy folk storyteller lens. If he’s lucky enough Francis is often accompanied by Hannah McKittrick bringing an air of class and some ripper keyboard solos to the whole thing. His Mum has had it up to here though and he’s gonna try and finish a couple of happy songs before this one.

“When Zac E Tea isn’t reinventing surf rock in Hobsons Bay Coast Guard, he’s serving up bossa-nova infused pop gems on his own. Last time I saw him his banter was lit and the songs even litter. Please dispose of all litter after show.” - James Lynch

Amy Dowd is a Noongar woman newly delving into the sights of a solo project. Known as the captivating front-woman for Melbourne's soul/groove outfit, 'Squid Nebula’, Bumpy (Amy) also delivers her own independent artistry.

Bumpy is an escape and outlet for all the things crawling inside her mind, while exploring the lengths of her own independent artistry.

B. Phillip w/ Niine (Duo) + Prickly Pear

12th MAY | THE RETREAT HOTEL | FREE ENTRY | 8pm START

Come for the MUSIC. We all love playing. Its on a Sunday.

Hailing from the Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne Prickly Pear are a trio of friends that share a love of creating and improvising. Along with exploring modern modal harmony, the band also takes inspiration from Randy Newman’s Americana and John Scofield’s fusion grooves. Much like their name suggests, their music aims to capture the audience with a unique sound and sweet melodies, but can also pack a prickly punch.

--------------------------------------------------------

Niine the idiosyncratic ball of quirky goodness has been hitting the live music scene hard. Niine's vibrant song writing and organic grooves have been making an impression since the end of 2016. As the world’s first avant-guard avalanche pop artist, she brings a completely new sound to the music scene through her recordings and live shows. Her abstract view of the pop world and discrete punk attitude is delivering exactly what the pop music scene craves.

---------------------------------------------------------

B.Phillip blends folk, jazz and hip-hop to bring to life musical ideas that explore politics, the natural environment and sometimes fantasy worlds. Love of vocal harmony and shifting time signatures permeate the projects sound, giving colour to the lyrics and melody. The music is played with guitar, drums, bass guitar, keys and alternating sets of vocal folds. With the music changing shape, regularly throughout the set, B.Phillip aims to keep the soundscape fluid and surprising.

Cacartu w/ reallynicedad DJ

Cacartu bid you all farewell for now.

It has been a ripper of a time and we can’t thank you enough for your support over the years. We wouldn’t be what we are today without all of you.

We have laughed and cried, grown together and played our little hearts out for old friends and new. It is time now for Cacartu to take some time to rest.

Though it’s not forever; not at all. We simply need some time to reflect, to think, to play and to rest.

Who’s to say how long this hibernation will be, but we hope to be back soon - rejuvenated, energised and raring to go with some fresh tunes to share.

From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you all for coming with us on this fantastic journey. Your passion and excitement for the music we make is a nourishing and humbling experience.

Please join us tonight for a celebration of the good times and to dance with us at our last show for a while. Two extended sets from Cacartu. Old jams, new jams, covers from way back in the day - What’s more to love?

With all our love,
Brayden, Kyle, Lachlan, Sebastian and Kaitlyn.

Bec Goring w/ Eaglemont + David Western

---------- Bec Goring and Band --------------

--- Supports from Eaglemont and David Western ----

Amidst a new wave of avant guard Australian troubadours singing for the hardships and stuff ups of the 21st Century, Bec Goring fills hearts with sweet vocals backed by lush blues infused tones and riffery. Backed by the dulcet tones of Angus Radley, Mimi Gilbert and Jess Ellwood.

David Western's bashful and winsome sensibility has fooled many. An explorer of personal space, soaring downcast rock and dimly-lit folk tunes, he's an old soul that writes with purpose - observing the norm and turning things inside out.

Eaglemont is a Melbourne indie folk/rock project by singer songwriter Bridg Jessop. Eaglemont roars into 2019 with her insatiable brand of indie rock delivering hooky guitar lines doubled with emotional and heartbreaking lyrics.
