    (22/3) DOC HALIBUT RESIDENCY

    8:30 PM

Contrary to what the name suggests, Doc Halibut are actually a five piece band (two guitars, hammond, bass and drums), rather than your local practising G.P. The band’s music sits somewhere between Rhythm and Blues and Country/Rock; where the styles of Ry Cooder may meet The Band or perhaps the Stones and Van Morrison. Doc Halibut themselves have ironically described their sound as “regressive rock”, but however it may be categorized, it’s music and it gets the toes tapping. Based in Melbourne, Doc Halibut regularly perform around town as well as at festivals and venues all around the country, and with a busy year of gigging in store and preparation well under way for an album launch in the later half of the year, there’s much to look forward to.

(25/3) OUTSIDE THE ACADEMY + ROMEO MOON + SQUAREHEAD

    8:30 PM

Outside The Academy is Pawel Cholewa (pronounced Pa-vell Ho-liv-er); a nomadic producer and multi-instrumental performer who “has the balance between experimental and euphonics just right” (Jae Salmon – 4ZZZ). “Outside The Academy is about sustaining moments of suspense and euphoria. His echoey mix of rock/electronica embodies heavy breathing and minds expanding” (Sarah von Bock – Happy Music Blog). Meddling with the minimalist production of glitchy melancholy nightclub beats, loops, samples and layered melodic guitar effects Cholewa creates a full ensemble-like presence, whilst interlacing and intertwining experimental and ethereal elements to create his own ubiquitous school of sound in Outside The Academy. Supported by Romeo Moon and Squarehead.

Back in Time is a moody cautionary tale, laden with regret and empty bottles.  The track propels steadily over a gently shuffling beat and features some beautiful vocal interplay between Harvey Russell and Josie Rothwell.  It’s well suited to a long drive and lots of time inside your own head.  Back in Time is the first single off their duo’s third EP, recorded at Love Hz Studio with Michael Carpenter (The April Family, Michael Carpenter & the Cuban Heels), due for release later in 2017.  Peasant Moon are joined by Rick Hart for the Melbourne Back in Time single launch show.

(4/4) JOE MATERA + RUBY GILL

    8:30 PM

Singer/songwriter/instrumentalist and guitarist Joe Matera is a melodious troubadour, having amassed quite an impressive track record in his career.  This includes playing guitar for famed British music legend Steve Harley (Cockney Rebel fame) to performing on the festival stages in Europe to scoring a Top 20 hit on Radio Berlin in Germany.  His songs and music speak with authority and emotion straight from the heart.  Since 2011, he has recorded and released four well received CDs through European record label W.A.R Productions, and tours Europe each year.  He has supported the likes of Aussie music legends Mental As Anything and indie-popsters Skipping Girl Vinegar and recently issued his third full length studio album ‘Louder Than Words’.

Ruby Gill sings songs about privilege and Great Dane tongues and stories hummed through clenched teeth.  With piano keys and rusted strings, without fear of feeling things, a Melbourne bed to call a home (aspiring redhead, chocolate tones).  Her debut album, Older, is a two-part,12-song journey of brightly coloured paint stains and pencil lines.  Like the LPs of yesteryear, 6 songs live in each half.  A distinctive set of lungs soar through powerful set of dark, pulsing introspections, marrying a definitive musical complexity and lyrical sharpness with a universal, memorable appeal.

    (22/4) ROYAL CHANT

    9:00 PM

Royal Chant is a 3 piece garage band originally from the sleepy coastal town of Port Macquarie.  Fast & fuzzed, slanted & slurred, they are now based in Sydney and have spent the last 4+ years playing shows across Australia on stages big & small.  After a handful of singles and a smashing on Triple-J with their single “Somedays”, their debut LP Raise Your Glass & Collapse was named Indie Album of the Week by the Brag amongst a flurry of press, and their raucous live show gained the band some serious attention. Recently returned from their maiden tour of the USA, the duo is back to recording and touring, carving their own strange path out of the spotlight but somehow never far from it.  They keep their heads down and the distortion up, creating an alternate world of pounding drums, walls of sound, & songs that speak with the ache and numbness of existence.

    (29/4) OLD ETIQUETTES

    9:00 PM

Old Etiquettes are a 5 piece Melbourne band started by J M S Harrison & Thomas Maginn who mutually shared a love of The Cure and old fashioned ways.  Things have gone off in all kinds of directions since then but the band is very much alive with a very rich sound of 3 guitars, bass and drums.  Haunting, pretty, walls of sound crashing hard then cascading and gliding along delicately often in the same song.
