    7:30 PM

From the eastern suburbs of Melbourne come The Bean Project, a vibrant French horn-clad acoustic quartet blending the raw untreated sounds of folk, jazz and singer-songwriter styles with fresh and unique songwriting - most aptly described as 'the odd marriage of James Taylor and The Cat Empire'. Following the release of their 2015 EP, the duo sought to expand and explore their sound, joining forces with a jazz influenced rhythm section. The newly appointed Beans were put straight to task with The Bean Project’s newest live EP set to be released in September, featuring a small collection of old and new songs to showcase their bold new sound. Joining the Beans is Adelaide folk artist Louis Donnarumma. Being influenced heavily by the likes of Jeff Buckley, Damien Rice & Matt Corby, Louis has crafted a unique and alternative folk style that has excited audiences for the last two years. Joined by his equally as exciting rhythm section, the show promises to be nothing less than a powerful night of contemporary folk right in the heart of Brunswick.

(15/7) SHORTS FAST FRIDAYS: NEVER + BEYOND CONTEMPT + ADALITA DJ SETS

    9:30 PM

NEVER formed in early 2014 as weekly jam session and a bit of fun between mates and is made up of current and ex-members of Frankenbok, Dreadnaught, Block and Red Sky Burial. Since Jason Richmond joined the band of vocals in March of 2015 however the guys realised that they were really on to something and in August 2015 released their first demo which was followed up by their first gig in September, supporting Dave Tice from legendary Aussie stoner rock icons Buffalo. The response to the demo has been fantastic and it hasn’t taken long for the band to start generating a real buzz. The band have embraced a total DIY approach to everything they do. They are signed to their own label, record their own music, make their own cd’s, print their own t-shirts, make their own film clips and are totally self managed. The band have managed to spread 1000 copies of their demo all over the country and beyond in the space of a couple of months and are due to release a follow up free 3 song CD in early July 2016. At this stage the band plan to restrict shows to about every 3 months due to everyones busy schedules with their other very busy and well established bands and will continue to spree the word via the free cd’s and online. NEVER is, was and always will be about having fun and keeping it simple. Some of the members are close to clocking up 25 years of playing in bands, as far as we are concerned we’ve earned the right to not take this band too seriously and just enjoy playing music together as friends.

    (23/7) BELLE HARVEY (WA)

    5:00 PM

Belle Harvey is a woman for all seasons, whether mesmerising audiences performing her own songs on guitar and lead vocals or as the perfect foil as a bassist and backing singer for others such as Ruby Boots. That versatility and willingness to serve the music is what has made her into one of Western Australia’s most respected roots music players. Belle’s own songs are always deeply imbued with her infectious personality, whether that is on stage or in the recording studio. The spirit of the performance sits high in the mix as she sings about affairs of the heart and the mind with a voice that fits the folk and country world perfectly. There’s just the right amount of ache and yearning to give the songs a sense of honesty, pathos and verve. Belle is showcasing her new single 'Bridges Burn' (which is off her upcoming album co-written & produced by Bill Chambers) at The Retreat with a bunch of her closet Melbourne buddies and is set to be a night of fun and friends, two of Harvey's favourite things.

    8:30 PM

Music lovers the world over continue to learn about this band that’s earned a nationwide following and international fans with its honest, original music fused with synergy, sugar, sweat and soul. The 14-year-old four-piece combo plays an Americana that encompasses Texas honky-tonk, Bakersfield twang, Memphis rockabilly, Western swing and good old-fashioned rock ’n’ roll. After nearly constant touring for the past 14 years, including thousands of dates across America, Europe and Australia, songs from the band’s fourth album, MILES FROM HOME (Dionysus Records, June 2008; produced by Conrad Uno), are still earning steady airplay, including “Cold Pines and Red Dirt,” which earned band front woman- lead vocalist and songwriter Ruby Dee- runner-up honors in Songwriter magazine’s 2007 competition. The album charted in at #86 on the AMA Top 100 for more than four weeks and #26 on the Texas Third Coast Music FAR Top 40. Ruby and the band are releasing a brand new album on Catty Town Records and we here in Australia get first crack at it! LITTLE BLACK HEART is the first record Ruby has been able to write since a bad accident 8 years ago that left her with a TBI. Ruby’s worked her way back from that, and folks are saying these are some of the best songs she’s ever written.’
