(11/12) JUSTIN BERNASCONI + BEN MASTWYK

    8:30 PM

Justin Bernasconi is a rarity among guitarists and songwriters. Straddling styles and sounds from the Delta Blues, Appalachian Bluegrass, English Folk and all stops in between, his highly original tunes, are infused with exciting and soulful guitar playing. Raised in the small Cambridgeshire village of Warboys - famed for witches and WW2 Lancaster Bombers - Bernasconi was never short of a story to tell. He moved to Australia in 2004, and formed The Stillsons in 2006, and the band has released three critically acclaimed albums so far: Circus (2009), Earnest (2011); and Never Go Your Way (2013), the latter being voted ‘Country Album of 2013’ in Rhythms Magazine Readers Poll. In 2014, he released his solo debut album Winter Pick, demonstrating his love of British and American folk guitar styles, and featuring stories from his childhood in Cambridgeshire. Produced by ARIA award-winning Jeff Lang, the album was described by Australian Guitar Magazine as “a dexterous display of picking that does a stellar job of treading the fine line between guitar showboating and tasteful melodies”. It received glowing reviews in many other Australian publications, including: The Australian, The Age, The Sydney Morning Herald, and overseas magazines: R2 Magazine (UK), Guitar Techniques (UK), and Maverick (UK). Tracks from the album were widely played on AMRAP, ABC network, BBC regional and national radio programs, and the title track was used on the critically acclaimed Australian cinematic release, ‘Wide Open Skies’. Bernasconi has been regular at major folk festivals, including: Melbourne Guitar Show (2016), Port Fairy Folk Festival (2015) and Melbourne Guitar Makers Festival (2015).

(15/12) CHRIS PICKERING + GREG CATHCART

    9:30 PM

There’s a story that goes like this: in 2008 Chris Pickering decided to pack his bags and guitar, and relocate to one of the most competitive music cities in the world, Nashville Tennessee. It was during this time in Nashville that Chris met and agreed to work with legendary Stax Records producer, Don Nix. This collaboration resulted in the recording of his third album “Work of Fiction”. It was working and recording in Nashville that began to shape the future direction of his own unique songwriting style, a style that is to be found all through his latest releases, the EP Corners, and his latest single, Canyons (released July 2015). CHRIS PICKERING has made a name for himself in a short space of time. An accomplished drummer, finger picking guitarist, singer and also pretty handy on the harmonica, CHRIS PICKERING’s musical ability and song writing skills, as well as stage presence, all go to forming an exciting performance. (Faster Louder)
