    (28/5) JOHNNY LONGSHOT

    5:00 PM

The 1960’s was a golden decade for Jamaican music beginning with Ska, the offbeat powered fusion of American R&B with traditional Caribbean music such as Calypso and Mento, 1967 saw the slower groove of Rocksteady move to the fore, sometimes described as soul with a Jamaican Beat and at the end of the decade the first seminal tracks of the rebel music that is reggae. Johnny Longshot plays a mix of original material and songs from the vaults of this classic era of Jamaican music with passion and vigor. Soulful and upbeat at the same time, this music warms the heart and moves the feet.

    (28/5) THE BON SCOTTS

    9:30 PM

Folk revivalists The Bon Scotts are taking their charismatic and often-boisterous live show on the road again. After crashing a few folk festivals, touring the east coast and taking a much needed winter break, the band has taken some quality time off to put some new songs to tape. With booming drums and drunken sing-alongs, Good Times joyfully remembers making bad decisions, falling in love and getting lost.

    (29/5) DAVE HOLMES GANG

    5:00 PM

David Holmes has been around the block many times. Firstly recording a single in the 70's and in the last decade recording his original songs with Nicki Bomba and playing with Jeff Burstin in his band Urban Sprawl. This time he has teamed up with Dave Adam who has worked with James Black, Greg Ham and that rock legend Ross Hannaford. David'as songs are inspired by the city, its lane ways and bars and the people that make his home town of Melbourne tick.

(29/5) DUNCAN GRAHAM AND HIS CO-ACCUSED

    7:30 PM

After eight years of hyperactive touring, including hundreds of shows and three albums, Duncan Graham And His Co-Accused took eight months off last spring to write, rehearse and re-intensify their sound. Now they are ready to break open that chrysalis, and charm and/or scare the pants off Melbourne with their new stuff. And where better to do it than the legendary main stage at The Retreat? All the idiosyncrasies that they are known for are still in abundance, if not ratcheted up to a new level. So, expect again the lush four-part harmonies, the crazed electric violin, the epic lyrical bombardments, and the high-wire dynamic extremes. Expect also the genre-defying centrifugal intent of their outlander musical ambition. Two sets, a handful of surprise guests, and the celebration of their fiddler's birthday make this a Sunday evening must.

(2/6) MANTIS AND THE PRAYER (PRE RELEASE PARTY) + TRIUMPH OVER LOGIC

    8:30 PM

All the way from NYC—at least in part—comes a group so unique they’re almost otherworldly. And there’s one thing for sure: once you hear Mantis and the Prayer, you won’t forget who they are. This collective of musicians is fronted by singer songwriter, Mantis who has settled in Melbourne, found a new line up for the band and the rest is history. Their debut album Butterflies and Demons is comprised of original songs with gothic and ethereal sounds, which can be described as a hybrid of Bowie, Nick Cave and the darkest moments of an Arcade Fire album. The album takes sonic wonder to a whole new level, using layers of vocal harmonies that are like a bellows, bluesy guitar riffs with sting , and lyrics that slowly breathe life into the listener with subject matter such as sex, the supernatural, heartbreak and madness.. Come dressed as a butterfly or demon (or something in between) and receive a free copy of Butterflies and Demons on CD to celebrate this pre-release! With fellow theatrical wonderlords, Siyor and Triumph Over Logic also on the bill, this is night is sure to be filled with awe inspiring devilish delight!

(9/6) CHRIS PICKERING + MADDIE JANE

    8:30 PM

Chris Pickering once lived in Nashville, TN, which is all the more confusing considering he originally came from Queensland. What happened to take him from there to the U.S. of A. was music. Music and songwriting. Living in Nashville, CP mixed with what the best of that town had to offer, and the worst, making a name for himself in the Indie-Rock scene of East Nashville. He's now based in Melbourne, and his band is good. Real good. Catch them while you have the chance.

    (12/6) THE NEW SAVAGES

    7:30 PM

In celebration of over 100 gigs together The New Savages are launching their second EP, "Goin' Over The River" on the 12th of June at the Retreat Hotel. It's going to be a huge party before they embark on their 20+ date national tour. With supports by Highway 79 (Rattlin' Bones Blackwood, Colin Thompson), the Retreat is going to turn into a Juke Joint for the Queen's Birthday long weekend. The New Savages play a Mississippi Hill Country Blues sound which is distinctly Melbournian. It’s often described as a uniquely droning and dark mix of Jim Morrison singing at a hoe down Juke Joint. The New Savages’ songs are at their foundation Milan Milutinovic’s primitive guitar style & deep baritone voice, which are then driven by Nathan Power’s relentless swinging drums.
