The Fitzroy River and surrounding area of Western Australia houses some of the oldest cultures in the world. Five different languages are spoken across the region as well as the oldest rock art in Australia. In Victoria, we often forget about the importance of these communities, due to the majority of culture here sadly being taken away from the traditional owners. In Fitzroy Crossing, the culture is still strong. The town is entirely owned and ran by the community. It’s been this way since the second half of the 1960s when equal wages and the pastoral award were introduced. Fitzroy Crossing was built from the ground up. The town itself is relatively young but it’s brought together the culture that has been alive for over 40 thousand years.

The past wet season has hit hard on the town. Due to climate change and fracking around the northern half of Australia and above the Fitzroy River... the town flooded. Taking out buildings, filling the town with crocodiles and destroying the iconic Fitzroy Crossing bridge that is the gateway to and from East Kimberley.

On the 7th May during the afternoon at The Retreat Hotel in Brunswick; STRANGER, Desire Path and Bigg Drift are putting on a fundraiser. The entirety of tickets sold and donations of any kind will go towards the Fitzroy Crossing community. This is our effort to help the Fitzroy Crossing community rebuild. $10 ticket donations.

The Retreat Hotel would like to acknowledge the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin Nation, the traditional custodians of the land on which The Retreat now stands, and pay our respects to all elders past, present and emerging. We acknowledge that sovereignty has never been ceded and that our venue operates on stolen land.
